In the previous issue, 4x Deployments with CF Express Mode 🚀☁️ #106, we looked into CloudFormation Express Mode.

If you’ve ever hit the dreaded CodeStorageExceededException while deploying microservices or managing heavy Lambda Layers across accounts, AWS just dropped an update you’re going to love. AWS Lambda now officially supports self-managed Amazon S3 buckets for code storage.

Historically, whenever you uploaded a ZIP package or layer, Lambda copied that artifact into its own managed storage behind the scenes. This redundant copy step introduced deployment latency and counted against a strict regional storage quota, forcing high-volume teams to constantly request limit increases.

With Self-Managed Code Storage, Lambda now references source code directly from your own S3 bucket without creating intermediate copies. This completely eliminates code storage limits, effectively giving you infinite deployment capacity bounded only by S3 itself. Furthermore, removing the internal copy step accelerates function creation and update cycles, letting your CI/CD pipelines run faster. You maintain a single source of truth inside your own account, complete with your existing S3 lifecycle policies and security governance—at no additional Lambda cost. As a bonus, AWS also quadrupled the default managed storage limit from 75 GB to 300 GB per Region.
