DynamoDB with fault injection testing 🚀☁️ #95
In the previous issue, Durable functions debut 🚀☁️ #94 was debut of durable functions, while we see the content on it growing even in this issue.
AWS has launched Fault Injection Service (FIS) support for DynamoDB Global Tables with Multi-Region Strong Consistency (MRSC). This allows you to intentionally inject faults into your global replication to see if your app stays standing. This update moves resilience from a theoretical “five-nines” (99.999%) promise to a verifiable reality by allowing you to simulate regional replication pauses in a controlled environment. Instead of waiting for an actual AWS outage to see how your stack behaves, you can now proactively trigger failure scenarios to observe how your application handles replication lag, validate that your New Relic dashboards or CloudWatch alarms actually fire during a crisis, and ensure your Lambda retry logic gracefully manages the disruption. By intentionally breaking the sync between regions, you can fine-tune your recovery time objectives (RTO) and confirm that your “strongly consistent” application doesn’t accidentally serve stale data or crash when the network gets messy.
⭐ Pick of the month
This month’s Pick is “Messaging queues“.
Harpreet Siddhu performs an RCA for a cost change where event source mapping was the 4 cent AWS bill which exposed the hidden cost with Serverless where a minor change requires a complete architectural review.
Jones Zachariah Noel N (author) takes on Buses and queues: Head-on comparing how Buses and Queues differ architecturally and the patterns of each service with bringing the best of them and also complimenting it together.
